How to Plan an Apple-Picking Trip

Three quick steps to a weekend outing you'll actually enjoy.

1

Find nearby farms

Use Orchards Near Me or search by state, city, or ZIP to see every verified orchard around you, sorted by distance.

2

Check the details

Open a farm's page for hours, apple varieties in season, U-Pick status, directions, and what's on the farm (hayrides, cider, farm store, picnic spots).

3

Go early on weekends

Popular orchards fill up fast on fall Saturdays. Aim for a weekday visit or arrive close to opening for the best selection and shorter lines.

When to Go Apple Picking

Apple season in the U.S. runs roughly from late July through early November, but the sweet spot for most pick-your-own farms is Labor Day through mid-October. Early varieties like Ginger Gold and Zestar ripen in August, followed by Gala and Honeycrisp in early September. Fuji, Empire, and the classic Northern Spy usually finish out the season in October.

Weather changes everything. A cool wet spring pushes the whole calendar back a week or two. Always check the orchard's current update before driving out, especially at the beginning and end of the season.

What to Bring

  • • Closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting muddy
  • • Cash for smaller farm stands (many still don't take cards)
  • • A cooler for the drive home if it's a warm day
  • • Reusable bags or a picnic basket
  • • Sunscreen, hats, and layers for kids
  • • Your own picking pole if the low branches are picked over
